Wynntown Marshals live session at Celtic Music Radio

The third full-length album by Edinburgh-based Americana band, The Wynntown Marshals is entitled “The End of the Golden Age” and was released in May 2015.

It follows on from “The Long Haul” (Blue Rose Records, 2013), which was voted 10th ‘Best Scottish Album of 2013’ by the Scottish Herald, and featured highly in many end-of-year polls in 2013, as well as topping the UK Americana Chart upon its release in August 2013.

In an 8/10 review, Uncut magazine described the album as “whisky-soaked, with blurry echoes of a decelerated Husker Du…” Furthermore, their 2009 debut, “Westerner”, was described by respected Dutch magazine ‘Heaven’ as “the best European Americana album… ever!”

“The End of the Golden Age” sees the band draw more on their Scottish roots to stamp their own uniquely personal take on the ‘Americana’ genre – the cinematic lyrics on this Caledonian scrapbook tell tales of migrations from Hebridean islands and modern life in the capital city, the sights, smells and sounds of Aberdeenshire fairgrounds, and the rural landscapes of West Lothian.

The music is similarly widescreen in scope and the influences are diverse; the jangling, pile-driving guitars and rich harmonies owing as much to countrymen Teenage Fanclub as to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers; the use of effects, horns and occasional synth more reminiscent of Eels, Jim Bryson, and The Weakerthans.

The new album receives a simultaneous release across Europe via German-based Blue Rose Records – arguably Europe’s leading Americana/roots label. The Marshals hold the honour of being the first and the only Scottish band to date to feature on the label’s roster, where they nestle comfortably alongside such illustrious and established company as Steve Wynn, Shooter Jennings, Sons of Bill, and Bottle Rockets.
Having already supported the Grammy-nominated Sturgill Simpson, Jason and the Scorchers, Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express, The Quireboys, and country legend Marty Stuart, The Wynntown Marshals regularly tour mainland Europe and the United Kingdom as a headline act in their own right, as well as gracing the stages of many of the UK and Europe’s top ‘boutique’ festivals.
